Letter from the Great Mother
I nearly called this 'Letter from love' but I wouldn't want to be mistaken for Elizabeth Gilbert... or would I?!
Tomorrow, millions of people will exchange cards and chocolates in the name of love. But today, I want to write about a different kind of love - one that can't be captured in heart-shaped boxes or roses. Not the romantic love that gets inflated and bandied around on Valentine’s day, not even self-love (though I’ve written about that before), but something more profound and enduring. A love that transcends pain and heartache, that reaches beyond our solitude and even our humanness itself. I can only refer to it as divine love.
I experienced a glimpse of this love last July, during a training with Woman within, a 5-day immersion in the sacred work of awakening women's inner wisdom (You can read more about my experience here). Late one night, after an emotionally profound day, we were invited to connect with the energy of Mother - not our earthly mothers with their human limitations, but the essence of pure, unconditional maternal love.
Time seemed to slow down and everything went quiet. In that sacred space, we each wrote a letter to ourselves. Not the letter we wished we'd received from our own mothers, but something far more powerful: words flowing from our inner Mother to our adult selves. As I curled up in a cosy leather armchair, paper and pen in my hand, I felt surrounded in a warm embrace, and a timeless and knowing presence move through me...
I don’t think I’ll ever forget this experience. Though the words flowed through my own hand, their message felt much bigger than me. That day, I tapped into an energy so light, so benevolent, and so loving, that I can only refer to it as The Great Mother. I imagine this is what spiritual ‘experts’ would call channelling. Her letter, although initially intended for me, carries this energy of divine love - too big, too precious to keep for oneself.
So on this Valentine’s day eve, I wanted to share with you that letter - because if you’ve landed here and you are reading this, I believe it’s meant for you, as well as me.
Maybe these are the words you need to hear today. Or maybe they’ll inspire you to write you own letter to yourself.
My dearest and beautiful daughter,
I am so proud to call you my daughter. The life you have created is full of meaning, purpose and love. You are so full of light. And it is a delight to see you shine brighter and brighter every day.
I know that some days, you feel tired, you lose hope and let despair take away your joy and laughter. But I am in awe of your strength and your ability to keep going.
Keep going, my love. Keep going. Never ever stop sharing your hope, your love and your light with the world. The world needs it and is made better by your presence.
Your vision for a better world and your gifts are worth sharing. Your wisdom is worth sharing. It is precious. And as you share it, it grows. Keep growing it. Keep growing your love, your joy and your wisdom.
And let it in! Let yourself receive it! Know that you are loved and supported. Let yourself be supported. Know that there will be others who will delight in supporting you, as you delight in supporting them. Mutual support is a source of joy. Let it feed you and nourish you.
You are a magnificent being. You are brilliant, inspiring and magical. Always remember this. For this is who you are!
Go well my love. I will always be by your side and in your heart. And you will always be in mine. I love you with all of me.
Your eternal mother
With love and gratitude,
Nathalie
